Public Transportation Options (Rome)

Hello everyone. My husband and I will be visiting next week and checking out the city before we move. I have researched different transportation options and want to figure out what would be best for us. We will be there for 8 days and have one full day of a sightseeing tour. Besides that, we will be staying in 2 different parts of town (Ripa and Villa Ada areas) and just going here and there.

My only 2 real options I've seen thus far are the 48 hour Roma Pass or the 7 day CIS pass. Do you think it would be worth purchasing one or both? Or would we be better off just purchasing our ticket each time we decide to ride the train/subway/bus?

Also any do's/ don'ts advice you have on public transportation would be much appreciated!
