Syracuse is located in Onondaga County in New York and is one of the largest cities in the state. Syracuse is a major economic center in the area as well as being a hub for education, whilst its name is influenced by the Sicilian town Siracusa. The city is known by the nickname ‘the Emerald City’ because of its commitment to greener environmental policies. Expats living in Syracuse will find plenty on offer in the city and will be able to take advantage of attractions such as the Everson Museum of Art, with works of art and pottery from American artists which date back to the 18th century, the Warehouse Gallery, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park which is home to over 700 animals, and many other galleries and museums. Syracuse is a fantastic city and has a much lower cost of living than other major cities in the area, particularly New York City. With a sub continental climate, Syracuse tends to have hot and humid summers with cold winters, and a higher average snowfall than most other cities in the US. The city is conveniently located for travel, with road links to other parts of the US as well as a number of train services and the Syracuse Hancock International Airport which, while international in name, serves mostly only national flights. Buses are the main mode of public transport within the city itself. Syracuse is known for having excellent education facilities, ideal for expatriates moving to Syracuse with families, whilst Syracuse University is the main further education institution in the area.
