Help! First steps on the way to Canada (Toronto)

Hello, I'm planning on moving to Canada in the Summer of Protected content , find a job and stay. I want to live in the Greater Toronto Area, because my girlfriend lives in St. Catharines.
Can anybody help me? I have no idea what I'm up against yet :) First thing is problem getting a work visa?
