Do you send your passport when applying for Visa?

Heya, just wondering if anyone knows when applying for Visa, do you send your physical passport? Or do you send them embassy's a copy of your passport? Just wondering from anyone who has gone through the Visa application process? I am slightly worried about not getting my passport back if I have to send it.
