John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as a running mate for the Protected content , surprised many. As governor of Alaska (one of the most sparsely populated states in the US), her experience is probably limited (by her own admission, she has only traveled twice abroad). She is also quite the controversial character. She opposed abortion even for rape and incest victims, she supports drilling for oil in the environmentally-sensitive arctic area. Most surprisingly perhaps, she thinks global warming is not caused by humans. Those are all positions that probably won't make her very popular among mainstream American voters?

Why did McCain choose her? Did he think he would attract women voters disaffected by Hillary Clinton's failure to secure the Democratic nomination?
