The transformations of Paris under the Second Empire were decided by Emperor Napoleon III, who returned from his exile in London very impressed by the modernity of the English capital where he had stayed between Protected content 1848. In Protected content , he appointed Georges-Eugène Haussmann ( Protected content ) prefect of the Seine and entrusted him with the task of cleaning up Paris and building one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. The latter then begins with a phase of expropriation and destruction necessary to initiate work of an unprecedented scale.
Superimposed on medieval and picturesque Paris is a modern city, pierced by boulevards, whose building facades are strictly regulated, equipped with new urban facilities, public monuments, water and gas networks and numerous green spaces. Despite the fierce criticism of its contemporaries, particularly relating to the exorbitant cost of the works and their social repercussions, Haussmannian Paris contributes to the brand image of the capital and its urban fabric still conditions contemporary Paris.
After the exhibition we will have a snack au "kiosque des fontaines" overlooking the Eiffel Tower.
