Ready to Join?

It's this time of the year when the gray whales start migrating again, so we are very excited to invite you to our next event which will lead us to an exceptionally beautiful and unique corner of West Marin which also offers spectacular viewing of the annual Northern gray whale migration without actually having to set foot on a boat:-) Point Reyes National Seashore!

THE VENUE: "Engaging in the longest migration of any mammal, the California gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) swims 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) each year, spending about one third of its life migrating from the cold, nutrient-rich waters of Alaska, to the warm, shallow lagoons of Baja California. Along the way, these incredible animals can often be seen from the shores of Point Reyes. Jutting 16 kilometers Protected content into the Pacific Ocean, the headlands of the Point Reyes Peninsula offer one of the finest spots to view the gray whale!"

THE PLAN: We will meet at 11:30 at Protected content This is about 1 h 30 min drive from San Francisco, so plan on leaving no later than 10:00 from the city (there is weak or no cell phone service out there, so communication will be difficult once you are in the area). There are currently several changes/abnormalities going on at Point Reyes, such as the renovation of the Lighthouse, partial closure of Drake's Beach because a new colony of elephant seals settled there during the government shutdown and others. All of this should be resolved by the time of our event, I have been told by Rangers. We will keep monitoring these and keep you updated with more details regarding the event. In any case the plan is to visit Drake's Beach and the elephant seals, the famous lighthouse (known from the Carpenter movie "The Fog"), as well as a short hike to Chimney Rock where the chances of spotting whales close to shore are the highest. BTW, did I mention that it will be wild flower season then:-)

Please bring your own box lunch at your leisure, since we might not have the time and space for a large picnic this time. It can be quite windy out there, so please dress in layers with firm shoes. Weather updates will follow as we get closer.

THE LOGISTICS: The event requires a car ride. Drivers, please post your empty seats for people needing a ride.

We look forward to seeing old friends and acquaintances and also meeting some new members. Come and join this fun group! Everybody is welcome and it only takes one time to become an insider and friend of this smaller circle and comfortably personal group. Sign up quickly as this event usually "sells out" fast!

Any questions please e-mail or post on board. We will post more info as we get closer. Look forward to meeting everyone:-)

Best regards,
