Lecture - “Unravelling the Work of Okamoto Tarô"

Lecture “Unravelling the work of Okamoto Tarô”
Conférence « Dénouer l’œuvre d’Okamoto Tarô »
岡本太郎作品を紐解く
The purpose here is to understand why an artist who lived in France for ten years and who made this experience a cardinal point in his history has remained so confidential in France, even though he established himself as one of the central points of reference for the avant-garde in Japan from the Protected content onwards. What we have here is a particularly exemplary case of ‘clash of reception’.
In order to (re)discover Okamoto, we will focus mainly on two moments in his career: the Paris years ( Protected content ) and the preparations for the Universal Exhibition of Japan in Osaka (Expo '70).
Benoît Buquet, lecturer in art history at the University of Tours (InTRu research unit - Interactions, Transfers, Artistic and Cultural Ruptures), is the curator of the exhibition "Tarô Okamoto. Un Japon réinventé" Protected content - 7 September, musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac).
