Danse #1: Conan Amok
Multi-Layered Body “Animal” - Conan Anok
阿目虎南
For several years now, the dancer and choreographer Conan Amok has been developing a dance technique that is also a philosophy of the body: the ‘Multi Layered Body’. He takes this philosophy to the extreme in this solo piece, which he presented last year at the Dairakudakan company’s studio, under the supervision of Akaji Maro.
The body is not regarded as a subject or a symbol, but as the site of phenomena where impulses, memory and consciousness arise simultaneously. The ‘animal’ in the title of this piece refers to a return to an anonymous and uncontrollable physical state, prior to language, reasoning and social identity. What emerges in the violence of the movements is ‘a body as a phenomenon’ in which the cycle of creation and destruction repeats itself.
This solo is a drama that unsettles the audience’s perception, questioning the boundary between human and animal, the conscious and the unconscious, and generating tension and danger.
