Presentation : The 8th plague
„ The 8th Plague"
Swarms of locusts belong to one of the oldest hazards to people’s livelihoods since prehistoric days and are mentioned in the Torah as the Eighth Plague. For thousands of years, suddenly appearing locust swarms were considered as a punishment of God, bringing hardship, misery and starvation upon entire populations as they devoured all crops and all green vegetation. It is only one century ago that scientists started to understand this phenomenon and the nature of this difficult to predict insect pest and thus developed techniques to control them and concepts to prevent locust plagues. The aim today is to protect the countries specifically in Africa and Asia from being invaded by locust swarms and to safeguard their harvests.
