The roar of the Celtic Tiger characterized the Protected content . They began with the election of the country’s first woman president, to be followed by another seven years later.
The economy story was equally spectacular.
There was net inward migration for the first time.
Times were crazy. 100% mortgages. Christmas Shopping in New York. Drinking champagne in the hairdresser’s. Giving shares as presents. Visiting Santa in Lapland. Tribunals of enquiry into corruption in high places. Cocaine seizures and open gang warfare made headline news. Yet what goes up must come down. Banks lent money as though it didn’t just grow on trees, a property boom imploded overnight along with a global economic slowdown brought it all down in an economic collapse that had not been seen in a developed country since the Great Depression.
What went right? What went wrong? Was the Celtic Tiger just an overgrown Big Cat? Should we have called the Pope? And what happened to all the hectoring Bishops? We wish it had never ended….
