History of Today: Russia - Ukraine War

Just over a week ago, Russian troops crossed the border into Ukraine across its northern, eastern and southern frontiers, expecting to meet little resistance. However, the invasion has suffered many setbacks, not least of which is the reluctance of Russian troops to fight.
It is also becoming apparent that after a series of shrewd (if Machiavellian) gambles over the years, President Putin has now made a serious miscalculation, with far reaching political, strategic and economic consequences, for Russia, Ukraine, Europe, and in all likelihood the world. Is it Putin's 'George Bush' Protected content , Iraq) moment?
In our quest for knowledge, we find ourselves beset in the mainstream media, depending on where you live, with just two narratives - one from the Kremlin and one from the Washington consensus. Both are devoid of mention of the region's untapped oil and gas reserves, for just one example.
Both also attempt to hide such real aims and objectives in an Orwellian spectacle wherein emotions can be manipulated, and facts or motives either distorted or omitted altogether as suits the occasion.
We will watch a video interview together with Professor of History Gerald Horne (50m) at Houston University from last week on the subject, to help prime ourselves for the discussion after. It must be understood that the war in Ukraine is a rapidly changing and politically volatile situation, so opinions will differ and attendees are asked to be respectful and understanding of each other.
