Greece: The Hidden War, Part 1
The 'Big Three' conference at Yalta in Protected content the USA, the British Commonwealth and the USSR divided up post-war Europe into Great Power 'zones of interest' where the real aspirations of peoples living in these arbitrary zones held no consequence and were often simply ignored.
Greece fell into the British zone, so the latter decided to reinstall a discredited monarchy to serve their imperial interests, despite the fact that Greece had more or less liberated itself from Nazi occupation without Allied armies, and where the communist-led partisan movement (EAM-ELAS) held overwhelming popular support.
Beginning in Protected content , and while war with Germany was continuing, the British, and later also the US, contrived to destroy the forces of Greek national liberation and to impose their will by force, even re-employing former Nazi collaborationist militias to assist them.
The Channel 4 series 'The Hidden War' from Protected content the first UK documentary to investigate this thorny topic. It caused so much consternation within the British establishment at the time that only the first part was allowed to be broadcast before the series was suppressed and 'disappeared' from the TV listings.
In this series of presentations, we will watch each episode in turn and discuss the subject afterwards.
