Hannibal Barca, Rome’s Greatest Enemy (1) - Setting the Stage

A great general and a masterful tactician, Hannibal Barca is widely considered one of finest military geniuses in history.
Throughout most of the third century BCE, Rome was engaged in a series of struggles with another powerful Mediterranean state — Carthage.
The most brutal of those conflicts — the Second Punic War — put Rome in the greatest danger it ever faced. Rome eventually won, but it never forgot the man who had orchestrated its most shameful defeat: Hannibal Barca.
HistoryMarche did a great series of videos about this war with special focus on Hannibal's invasion of Italy through the Alps. But before delving into this series, we would like to introduce you to the forgotten history of Carthaginian Empire and the situation of both belligerents before the Second Punic War.
