Roman Trier 1

After Rome itself, Trier in Germany clearly ranks as the second most prominent city to boast an impressive array of excavations testifying to the wealth, sophistication, and urban planning of the ancient Romans. In this 2-part lecture, I shall introduce you to the history of Roman Trier and then take you on a virtual tour through the main monuments, with a focus on the Porta Nigra, Amphiteater, Basilica, Imperial Baths. Having for many years guided American study abroad students on 3-day trips to Trier, and taken a major field in ancient Roman history at university (constitution of the Republic; early Principate), I am well-placed to speak to the subject.
