Zachor! Remember! Medieval Persecutions in Jewish Memory
Memory plays a significant role in Judaism. It involves the concept of awareness and understanding, not only of the past but also of its significance for the future.
The lecture provides an overview of a selection of Jewish sources that report on persecution, massacres, and expulsion in the Middle Ages. They directly describe the experiences, the course of events from a Jewish perspective, and the suffering of the Jewish communities. To this day, the memories of the persecutions have been inscribed into Jewish memory and are part of liturgy and prayer.
