The Kybalion is one of the most mysterious and hotly debated occult works ever written—and without question the most popular and widely influential book of arcane philosophy of the twentieth century. It has influenced everything from the Prosperity Gospel and the positive thinking movement—including The Law of Attraction—to witchcraft and a range of esoteric groups.
In this Banyen talk, Philip Deslippe will give an overview of The Kybalion and its fascinating impact. He will also talk about The Kybalion's sole author, William Walker Atkinson, and his numerous ties to Theosophy.
Philip Deslippe is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on Asian, metaphysical, and marginal religions in modern America, and he is currently writing a dissertation on the early history of yoga in the United States from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. He has published several articles in academic journals such as the Journal of Yoga Studies, Contemporary Buddhism, and Sikh Formations, and has also written over two dozen articles for popular audiences in such venues as Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, Yoga Journal, Air & Space Smithsonian, the Indian news site Scroll.in, and Tides, the magazine of the South Asian American Digital Archive. In Protected content , he edited and introduced a new and definitive edition of the metaphysical classic The Kybalion for Tarcher/Penguin. His writing has been translated into Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, and Turkish.
