CARMENcita
The most popular numbers from “Carmen,” retold from Escamillo's perspective.
At the end of Bizet's masterpiece opera, the policeman Don José stabs Carmen, the woman he desires. It is the tragic climax of a relationship he has imagined unilaterally, marked by macho possessiveness and blind passion.
It can be assumed that Don José will be held accountable for this act and that there will be a trial. One of the witnesses is the bullfighter Escamillo. He has known Carmen since her youth and is also familiar with the milieu of the Gitanos, the Spanish Roma, from which the young woman originates and whose rules and moral values she cannot escape and probably does not want to escape.
In a flashback, he recounts the plot of the opera from his perspective. This makes it clear what misunderstandings José has fallen prey to and how these ultimately set the fatal course of events in motion.
This performance is accompanied by a slide show of images from Seville (Plaza de Toros, Plaza Major, etc.).
