OLGA AND JOHANN With Vasilis & Juliya!
The great love of Johann Strauss
An evening of romances by Olga Smirnitzkaja, as responses to selected love letters from Johann Strauss Jr. to her.
Olga Smirnitzkaja was one of the first women in Russia to engage in composition. Apart from the quality of her works, her efforts to overcome the conventions imposed on women in 19th-century Russia are remarkable in themselves. In this respect, Olga Smirnitzkaja was undoubtedly at the forefront of a pioneering development, writes musicologist Dr. Thomas Aigner, former director of the music collection at the Vienna Library.
In Protected content , he made an extraordinary discovery. A transcript of Protected content letters from Johann Strauss to his great love, believed to have been destroyed, was found. Unfortunately, Olga Smirnitzkaja's replies are still missing. However, her compositions, known as romances, have been preserved. Most of them date from the period before or shortly after her encounter with Johann Strauss. How would Olga Smirnitzkaja's life have turned out if she had married someone like Johann Strauss?
