Devenir – Spanish for “becoming” – refers to a natural, gradual form of transformation. Under this title, guitarist David Strbac presents a program that reflects key stages in his artistic development and his longstanding connection to Spanish music.

Strbac's interest in this repertoire began in his youth. Spanish guitar music had a lasting influence on his early years, so much so that his university professor later jokingly called him “Mr. Spain.” It was only over time that Strbac recognized the family background behind this affinity: his maternal ancestors came from Spain, a cultural heritage that was hardly present in his childhood in Serbia, but which unconsciously continued to influence his musical preferences.

The Belgrade-born musician has been living in Vienna for almost a decade. His artistic profile has been shaped by his years of study, international concert activities, chamber music projects, and formative personal experiences. The repertoire presented here was developed over a long period of time, during which Strbac gradually worked on and recorded the works—repeatedly influenced by moments that, in retrospect, proved to be decisive.

Devenir offers a concentrated insight into this process. The flamenco-inspired compositions of Falla, Turina, and Rodrigo stand in striking contrast to the lyrical musical language of a composer such as Eduardo de la Maza.
