Major Barbara is a social satire by Nobel Prize and Academy Award winning playwright George Bernard Shaw, written and premiered in Protected content . It is considered to be one of Shaw's most poignant and significant plays, in his prolific production but also in the history of modern drama. In both an indirect and direct
manner Shaw who was also a critic and political activist, raised many issues in the play which bear timeless social and political significance.
Major Barbara remains very popular to this day, with successful adaptations to film.
The story concerns an idealistic young woman, Barbara Undershaft, who is engaged in helping the poor as a Major in the Salvation Army. For many years, Barbara and her siblings have been estranged from their father, Andrew Undershaft, who reappears, following his ex-wife’s invitation, as a rich and successful arms manufacturer. His realism, views and arguments on life and morality spur debate within the family and a
confrontation with Barbara’s idealism. Undershaft’s significant donation to the Salvation Army and acceptance on their part is a turning point in the debate, as the plot unravels and truths are disclosed.

A compelling story and play, brought to vibrant, contemporary life by this powerful and abridged version presented by The Rome Savoyards.
