PLAY: SHARUM (Off-Broadway Debut!)
'SHARUM' is a documentary theatre piece that follows a Muslim family based in Queens, New York, following the wedding of their oldest daughter, Mariam. Throughout the wedding, all four siblings are forced to come face to face with the reality of their identities, battling the stigmas around mental health, addiction, and queerness -- exposing secrets to themselves and the community around them.
SHARUM recalls true events in these scenarios that capture the responses of their parents, and the ways it permanently affects their family dynamic.
Written by Mohammad Murtaza & Dena Igusti and directed by Ray Jordan Achan, this piece is making its off-Broadway debut. Produced by UNCOMMON;YOU, a NYC-based multi-disciplinary arts community that fosters and produces work for and by underrepresented creatives of color. UCY is a central hub for meeting dope people and putting intersectionality at the forefront.
