Weekend Hiking & Sightseeing Trip to beautiful Bad Mergentheim
Come along for an exciting fall hiking and sightseeing trip to beautiful Bad Mergentheim, a small town located appr. Protected content SE of Frankfurt. It is an officially recognized spa town (thus the “Bad” in its name) with an extensive and very pretty park located around the healing springs. The Teutonic Order (Deutschorden) chose the town for its headquarters from Protected content 1809. The huge castle in the center of Bad Mergentheim was the seat of the leaders of this order and today houses an interesting museum covering its history. Located along the Tauber river, the town is appr. 40 km NW of the world famous Rothenburg ob der Tauber respectively appr. 45 km S of Würzburg. Lots of impressions of the town and the park can be gathered by googling for pictures (Bilder) when entering “Kurpark Bad Mergentheim” or just “Bad Mergentheim”.
On Saturday, we shall hike on the circular socalled Local Panorama Trail which will take us completely around the city offering spectacular views of the town and the lovely Tauber valley from the adjacent heights. The hike is considered to be of medium difficulty with a length of just over 20 km and ascents totaling Protected content with an estimated total time of around 7 hours including a lunch break. Additional information and pictures of the trail can be found at
For the overnight stays I have made a reservation at Protected content
One additional cot could be placed in the largest room which brings the possible total to 12 attendees. Thus it looks like room sharing will be inevitable. Towels and linens are provided, but no toiletries. Please note there is only one full bathroom with tub, shower and toilet plus one extra toilet.
On Sunday Bad Mergentheim has many sights to offer: The castle and museum of the Teutonic Order, the adjacent park with the mineral springs, the old town with many half-timbered (Fachwerk) houses, a concert with a youth orchestra at 10:30 in the park, a concert at 16:30 of Händel's Messiah in the church next to the castle and many other points of interest. For those who have not been there yet a visit to the fairy tale medieval old-town of Rothenburg, which is about 30 km E of Mulfingen will be fun. It would be commendable to go there via Creglingen to see the famous chapel “Herrgottskirche” which houses a masterpiece wooden altar dedicated to St. Mary made by Tilman Riemenschneider (* Protected content Protected content of the most famous German sculptors and wood carvers. This altar is considered to be the most prominent work of this incredibly talented artist. Also Würzburg around 45 km N of Bad Mergentheim with its fabulous residence of the prince-bishops, its beautiful old-town and fortress Marienberg promises a wonderful day of sightseeing.
Wikipedia has plenty of information on all of these sights also in English.
I would be happy to take my car there and take along up to 3 passengers which should come to the train station of Kelkheim – Mitte, the second station in Kelkheim coming from Frankfurt. There would be 2 additional drivers/cars necessary to make this trip possible in case we have a full house.
Should a departure from Frankfurt in the morning of Friday be possible, additional sightseeing recommendations could be proposed.
When confirming your attendance please also leave a comment on my activity site with a preference for both the room and bed (for example: Room 4, single bed), which thus will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. This will enable people signing up after you to see which choices would be left. Otherwise we can wait until arrival to decide the room allocations. In case you are taking your car, please leave a comment to that effect together with a proposed meeting point and time. A maximum of possibly 3 additions passengers per car will be assumed. Passengers should in a later second step leave a comment to state which driver they would like to come along with. Finally please leave a comment as to your preference for a departure on Friday (morning or afternoon).
The accommodation could be cancelled by Oct. 10 without a charge in case for example the presently excellent weather forecast (0 precipitation,19 ͦ ) would turn bad. This should not be considered as a carte blanche to cancel “just because”, which may leave out others who would wish to come along. Given the limited number of possible attendees, I cannot accept a reservation from anyone who has cancelled after the deadline respectively the no-shows of the hikes I previously organized.
Please note that there is no nearby supermarket in Mulfingen. Of course there are plenty of them in Bad Mergentheim which we will pass through on the way to Mulfingen.
We could have a nice barbecue which I would be happy to organize and/or cook, with details to be discussed later.
The times for departure and return shown above have obviously just been entered because this is a mandatory field, by the way.
Looking forward to a fun filled and interesting weekend with hopefully still plenty of fall colors.
Please do not hesitate to call in case of any questions and please accept my contact request so we can communicate.
