The San Ruffillo weir and the associated Savena canal, together with the Casalecchio weir and the Reno canal, represent the two main infrastructures for harnessing hydraulic energy, which enabled the city of Bologna to become one of the wealthiest cities in medieval Europe.
The weir was rebuilt and modified several times throughout its history. The Second World War caused severe damage to both the weir and the canal. The structure underwent a complete restoration in Protected content .
