David Graeber’s Bullshit Job Theory

This summer, while in Venice with his Russian-born wife, the remarkable and entertaining anthropologist, political/economic writer and activist David Graeber suddenly died at the age of only 59.
The author of ‘Debt: The First Protected content Protected content ‘Bullshit Jobs’ Protected content has been lauded for his visionary insight into our modern lives, ever more full of ‘stuff’ but devoid of meaning. Graeber was not content to convey his findings in academic jargon, so deliberately wrote in a simple, immediate and humorous style to reach as wide an audience as possible.
The basic premise is that an ever higher proportion of us are compelled by market ideology to engage in ‘work’ towards some indeterminable end, just for the sake of it. Many of these jobs do not fulfill any essential tasks that contribute to society. Quite the contrary – the highest paid/status bullshit jobs are closer to feudal lords and their retinues, while the lower paid/status ones are churned out en masse to prevent the rest of us from doing anything truly creative or meaningful with our lives.
