Godunow takes us right into a time of apocalyptic mood that is characterized by hysteria, escapism and paranoia. Political background is the turbulent time of "Smuta" when Ivan the Terrible died and his son Dimitri died as a result of an injury to his neck. Murder? And what about the client Boris Godunov, who seven years later became the third Russian tsar? In times of unstable power relations, it was easy for an upstart like the ominous Grigory Otrepjew (the "false Dimitri"), who claimed to be Ivan's son miraculously recovered from his injury - so many blind historical spots where the imagination can rest the playwright ignited. Basis for Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov was Pushkin's drama of the same name. Guilty or not - with Boris Godunov, Mussorgsky creates the fascinating psychogram of an isolated ruler who is torn between maintaining power and gaining power.
Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits introduces himself 1st time with his production at the Zurich Opera House, the exquisite cast is led by the celebrated baritone Michael Volle as Tsar Boris
Looking forward seeing you again soon live and healthy!
