Who was Mr. Poquelin?

Dear InterNations,
This event is the first one of a new series of well-known French citizens.
The purpose here is: "Who was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin?"
"He was born in Paris where his father owned a carpet shop. As a young person, he decided to live as an artist.
At the age of 21, he founded a theatre company that soon went bankrupt. Later, the King Louis XIV made him responsible for the entertainment at the court of Versailles near Paris, but he had many enemies, especially in the Roman Catholic church. His theater piece are dealing with: jealousy, meanness, hypocrisy, fear of death. (...) He was not allowed to be buried in a church cemetery. "
Please, let's come to discuss about this incredible man and to share about his life. If you find the person, keep it for you.
If you didn't find who was this guy, you will find during this event.
Sincerely,
