SciFi Book Club January 2023 - Black Sun

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
The novel is the first from ‘Between Earth and Sky’ series and weaves a sweeping tale of vengeance, power and loneliness in a fascinating fantasy world inspired by various pre-Columbian American cultures. The author researched Southeast Asian, Native American and Mesoamerican civilizations, with the aim of writing fiction that was different from the traditional European settings of epic fantasy novels.
The story cycles between the perspectives of main characters Serapio, Xiala and Naranpa.
Serapio was born to be the tool of vengeance of his clan, the Carrion Crows, against the Sun Priest that wronged his family.
Xiala, a charismatic sea captain from the Teek clan with a deep connection to the ocean, is hired for the deceptively simple task of transporting Serapio to the city of Tova before the day of Convergence.
Naranpa is the Sun Priest and highest religious authority in Tova. Rising from deep poverty through merit and luck, Naranpa has made many enemies along the way.
‘’A god will return when the earth and sky converge under the black sun’’
