VERNISSAGE MUSÉE NATIONAL P.PICASSO LA GUERRE ET LA PAIX
Artist : PASCALE MARTHINE TAYOU
The objects, sculptures, installations, drawings, and videos created by Tayou share a common theme: the exploration of the individual in motion across the world, questioning the notion of the global village. Within this framework, Tayou engages in a dialogue about his African origins and the expectations attached to them. His works transcend the role of mediators between cultures or representations of the ambivalent relationships between humans and nature. They fully assert their status as social, cultural, or political constructions. His work is deliberately mobile, heterogeneous, and elusive in relation to pre-established frameworks. It is always deeply connected to the idea of travel and encounters with others, with such spontaneity that it appears almost casual.
Born in Protected content Nkongsamba (Cameroon), Pascale Marthine Tayou lives and works between Ghent (Belgium) and Yaoundé (Cameroon). Since the Protected content , with notable participations in Documenta Protected content Kassel and the Venice Biennale Protected content Protected content , he has become known to a wide international audience. His work escapes any limitation of medium or specific theme. Although his subjects are diverse, they all originate from his own person. From the beginning of his career, Pascale Marthine Tayou added an -e to his first two names, giving them a feminine ending, in order to distance himself with irony from the importance given to artistic authorship and gender stereotypes.
