VERNISSAGE : HENRI MATISSE ET YVES SAINT LAURENT
Beauty, Fashion and Happiness
The Musée Matisse Nice and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris are presenting a major exhibition dedicated to two outstanding creators who continuously redefined the 20th century.
If there is one defining link between Henri Matisse Protected content and Yves Saint Laurent Protected content , it is undoubtedly their shared desire to transcend the traditional distinction between “fine arts” and “applied arts.”
For Matisse, decorative patterns and their dynamic energy became a way of creating a pictorial space that extended “beyond the limits of the tangible.” For Yves Saint Laurent, painting offered the possibility of moving from the flat surface to volume, conceiving clothing as a mobile form unfolding in space—an art in motion.
Sewing and painting are gestures that share “the same exploration of line and the same mastery of contrasts between materials and volume.” Although Henri Matisse and Yves Saint Laurent never met, the dialogue between their works appears remarkably evident today.
This exhibition highlights these artistic connections by bringing together works from both creators.
Bringing Protected content haute couture garments, traditional costumes, paintings, drawings, textiles, accessories, and archival documents—the exhibition offers a unique journey through the profound relationship that Yves Saint Laurent, one of the greatest innovators of French fashion, developed with Henri Matisse, one of the most influential artists of his time.
