Nicolo Hike to Mariazell

Hey Hikers,
I’m really looking forward to celebrating Nicolo Day together this year — with a little hike and a visit to the Christmas market in Mariazell!
The plan is for an easy hike, about 10 km long with roughly Protected content elevation gain. We’ll start at the railway station, walk up to Bürgeralpe, and then head down to the Christmas market. There’ll be about two hours to wander around, enjoy a Glühwein or punch, and maybe grab some of that famous Mariazell gingerbread. 🍷🍪
Logistics
We’ll take the train from Vienna to St. Pölten, and then the R56 to Mariazell.
Departure: 6:55 from Vienna Main Station or 7:00 from Meidling.
I know it’s an early start but the later trains are already fully booked. We will change in St. Pölten to the Mariazellbah.
Important:
Please reserve your ticket for train Protected content St. Pölten (07:35) to Mariazell!
You can book it directly on the Niederösterreich Bahnen webshop — seat reservation is also possible.
Both the ÖBB Vorteilscard and Klimaticket are valid for this train.
For the way back, I’m planning to take the 17:05 train to St. Pölten and then the IC Protected content to Vienna, arriving at 20:00 in Meidling.
If you’d like to stay longer, there are later trains back at 18:05 and 19:05.
There’s also a light show on top of Bürgeralpe at 16:30, so if you’d like to see that, you can easily catch one of the later trains. 🌟
