Rossellini's Europa '51
Don't miss this remarkable film by Roberto Rossellini - one of the three strongest collaborations he produced with his then-spouse Ingrid Bergman. Brattle has scheduled this film at a rather inconvenient time, 4:30 pm, but it's worth making time for it.
This is a rather introspective film compared to his previous revolutionary productions. It starts as a conventional melodrama, but it soon morphs and diverts into highly psychological and political overtones. Set in postwar Italy, Ingrid Bergman stars as a wealthy woman who becomes a tireless champion of the poor and neglected of Rome following the death of her son.
