What You Can Expect from Your Life in Boston

One of the oldest cities in the Americas, Boston has a long history of welcoming expats and that is still the case today. Boston culture is unique, with a strong Irish influence, which can be felt among its citizens and streets. This beautiful city with its charming old neighborhoods can offer its own distinct accent (Boston English), excellently paying international jobs, plenty of museums and cafes, as well as delicious international cuisine. It is very well known that some famous institutes of higher education are located in the Greater Boston area, such as MIT and Harvard. As such, the city receives a huge amount of expats for postgraduate studies as well as those who move for an international assignment with one of the big companies found in and around Boston. Besides the academic field, Boston nowadays counts with many research centers and is privileged to have one of be best medical centers in the whole country. The city is filled with cultural highlights, lively night spots — including bars, particularly Irish pubs, live music as well as the most fined and international places for dining. In addition, some world-renowned sporting teams like the Red Sox and Celtics call Boston their home. Bostonians are huge sports fans and whether it's actively participating or just watching, sport plays an important role of their lives and surely will be part of your expat life as well. A few miles out of town, you can also find gorgeous outdoors with Ski resorts for winter fun and hiking spots perfect for any season of the year. Expats moving to Boston can expect their life there to be quite pricey, especially in regard to accommodation. Bostonians as well expats typically also have to spend a lot of money on heating during the winter. Winters in North England are long and snowy and really cold! So particularly if you're hailing from a tropical, warm country, make sure you bring the stock up on warm clothes against the wind and cold. The public transportation system in Boston is run by MBTA, with around half of the population making regular use of it. The local train network, most commonly called "T", includes different subway lines across Boston as well as streetcar and light rail operations. There are also many bus routes available. However, having a car in Boston, as anywhere in the USA, is typically more comfortable, but can be problematic during winter time, rush hours, or when trying to find an inexpensive parking spot in downtown.
