This season, Written on Skin returns to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, a gripping and thought-provoking opera by George Benjamin. Premiered in Protected content , the work is a striking adaptation of the 13th-century text Le cœur mangé, in which three angels look back at a time when books were precious, "written on skin." An illustrator, hired by a powerful Protector to create a manuscript, falls into an affair with his wife, Agnès, leading to a tragic and violent conclusion.

Martin Crimp’s libretto explores the power of art, as the illustrator’s images reveal the truth behind the affair, unraveling everything in their wake. With music that is both contemporary and visceral, this opera is an experience that demands your full attention.

Under the musical direction of Marc Albrecht and the intense staging of Katie Mitchell, Written on Skin promises a haunting journey you won’t soon forget.
