Falstaff
Hi all,
Verdi’s Falstaff is on at the Staatsoper Berlin, a commedia lirica in three acts, composed in Protected content a libretto by Arrigo Boito after Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. Directed by Mario Martone and conducted by Giuseppe Mentuccia, this is Verdi’s final opera and perhaps his most surprising one. Instead of tragedy, he leaves us with comedy - quick, witty, and full of life. Falstaff may be vain and ridiculous, but there’s something deeply human in his refusal to give up on pleasure and imagination. It’s Verdi looking back with humour and warmth, seeing the world not as it should be, but as it is, and loving it anyway.
*It will be performed in Italian, with surtitles in both German and English.
