Mix of Jazz and Latin American Styles by Unique Duo From NY
Deep from the corners of the Pan-American repertoire, Argentine vocalist Sofia Rei and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder delve into the hidden gems of the lore. With uncanny skills and gripping emotive range, they revisit compositions by iconic writers such as Noel Rosa, Pixinguinha, Nicomedes Santa Cruz, Chabuca Granda and Thelonious Monk. They thrive in the immense variety of Latin American styles, interpreted through an improvisational jazz ethos, in Spanish, Portuguese and English.
Born and raised in Argentina, Sofia Rei is a classically trained mezzo-soprano who redefines authenticity from an intensely personal perspective. She regularly collaborates with John Zorn, whose compositions she previously sung on our stage in her duo with J.C. Maillard. Peruvian double bassist Jorge Roeder continues to play with contemporary jazz figureheads such as Shai Maestro and Julian Lage. Sofia Rei and Jorge Roeder met each other in New York, where they have been working together for around twenty years.
‘Music of breathtaking beauty and emotional depth that showcase Rei’s luminous voice, masterfully enveloped in a tapestry of Roeder’s evocative bass lines’ (Downbeat).
