Free First Thursday Art Event
Every first Thursday of the month Contemporary Calgary opens its doors to the public for free.
Contemporary Calgary is a public art gallery located in the historic Brutalist-style former Centennial Planetarium in the west end of downtown. Their focus is visual arts dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The art and the building are worth the visit.
On Oct 1st the new exhibit is called Obsession. While there are other exhibitions on at the same time, this one is about skateboard graphics.
Driven by nostalgia and a desire to preserve the memories and visual culture of skateboarding, the collection includes individual boards and complete sets from skateboard collectors around the world. Obsession celebrates both the dedication of collecting and the enduring cultural impact of skateboard graphics.
The work is by influential skateboard artists including Evan Hecox, Don Pendleton, and Joe Castrucci, who transformed the skateboard deck into a canvas for distinctive visual languages and artistic expression.
