Dir Vittorio De Seta Protected content . This extraordinary film tells the tale of a shepherd turned outlaw. Michele is a shepherd that ekes out a meagre living with his brother. When bandits kill a policeman, Michele is mistakenly accused of murder and flees deeper into the highlands. De Seta’s vertiginous cinematography tracks the fugitive’s journey over sheer limestone cliffs and deep canyons, where shepherd-bandits hide out in cave shelters. Since the days of the Roman Empire, Sardinia had been synonymous with insurrection and lawlessness, with Orgosolo renowned as the ’village of murderers’ due to its high crime rate. De Seta’s stark, lyrical film captures the seasonal rhythms of drought, poverty and hunger which underlay the region’s reputation for banditry, as well as the rituals and family bonds which sustained life on the island. Heralded by Martin Scorsese as ‘an anthropologist who speaks with the voice of a poet,’ De Seta offers a remarkable time capsule of the now-vanished folkways of pre-industrial Italy. Winner of multiple prizes at the Protected content Film Festival.
