Enjoy a sporty New Year skiing in the French alps
Let's get together for a sporty New Year of ski in the French Alps !
All skiing levels (from total beginners to experts) are accepted.
Brides les Bains is less than 4 and 1/2 hours by TGV train from Paris-Protected content direct to Moutiers and then just 10 minutes of bus to Brides les Bains where we will be staying and where you will find the telecabine up to the ski slopes.
The skiing resort LES 3 VALLEES is a great place for ski.
In fact it is among the best ski resorts : the largest skiing domain in the world !
The snow is great and we can ski at Méribel, Courchevel (one of the best ski resorts in the world), Les Ménuires and Val Thorens (one of the highest altitude ski resorts in Europe, in case there isn't enough snow), each day can be in a different ski resort and never twice in the same place !
The snow and the vastness of the skiing area are just fantastic.
Brides les Bains is a small thermal (spa) city very conveniently located near the TGV train station at Moutiers.
Hotels in Brides les Bains are relatively cheap (well in fact, very cheap compared to Courchevel, Val Thorens and the other great skiing areas where we'll be skiing).
As for the train and choice of hotel, I strongly recommend you make your hotel and train reservations as quickly as possible as the hotel rooms and train seats are going fast.
If skiing levels of the participants are homogenous, we can ski together. By experience, to avoid spending too much time waiting for each other, depending on the number of participants, or if some are more cozy than others when it comes to waking up in the morning, and how fast or on what slopes we should ski, we might split and ski in several groups.
We will still get together to share and enjoy dinner in some of the local restaurants on evenings, and/or share lunch in one of the altitude restaurants for those skiing together.
There are several typical "restaurants savoyards" in Brides les Bains where you can discover and enjoy specialties of local cuisine such as raclette, pierrade, etc. and of course hot wine (vin chaud) !
I will be with my son (I am a good level skier, he is 12 and medium level, fast enough to follow).
Each participant organizes his own stay and participates under his sole responsibility, and children are under the sole responsibility of their parents.
To keep the organization as simple as possible, each participant or groups of participants makes his own train and hotel reservation independently, and manages his stay independently, but we can perhaps travel together, share meals in the local restaurants, and of course enjoy skiing together.
PLEASE RESERVE YOUR TRAIN AND HOTEL ROOM AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE FOR CHEAP RATES.
Practical infos :
SNCF / TGV train from Paris to Moutiers : Réservation obligatoire ! I will be travelling by the TGV Protected content Protected content
on monday 1st January, arriving in Moutiers at 21:48 (with a train change in Chambéry). Return on sunday 7th January by TGV leaving at 7:45 PM from Moutiers, arriving inProtected content
at 11:57 PM. I suggest you make your reservation on the same train(s) if possible, so we can then meet at or in the train and / or travel together.
Reservations through: Protected content
But of course you can also travel with another train departing later or earlier or on different days if it is more convenient for you. Cost is about Protected content 200 euros for the train tickets (rates vary depending on the train and date of reservation, I have just paid Protected content for the round trip for my son and myself on the train mentioned above). You can enjoy a -25% reduced rate, if you travel with me on the same trains (both back and forth) and choose the reduced tarif "Accompagnant carte enfant+" when making your reservation on line on sncf.fr. This reduced rate is however limited to a maximum of 4 adults, i.e. 3 participants other than myself.
From Moutiers to Brides les Bains : about 10 minutes by bus or by taxi. Go to Altibus or Mobisavoie on google to see the bus schedules. It is possible to take a taxi or Uber on monday (the train arrives at 9:47 PM and the last mobisavoie bus on that day is at 5:00 PM). On sunday 7th, you can reserve the 6:00 PM return bus from Brides les Bains to Moutiers, and the 19:45 TGV direct train back from Moutiers to Paris. We can perhaps have an early dinner in a restaurant just across the street from the railway station in Moutiers before rolling back to Paris. A prior reservation for the bus in this season (school holidays) is highly recommended : reserve yours mobisavoie bus ticket on line in advance on Protected content (in French) or Protected content (in English).
choose "Brides les Bains - Office du tourisme" and "Moutiers - gare SNCF" in the list of locations.
The bus doesn't wait if you are late. If there are no buses (if you take a later train or you miss the bus for some reason or in case it is full) you can still take a taxi at a reasonable cost, as it takes about 10 minutes and a few kilometers to drive from Moutiers to Brides les Bains. Cost of the bus ticket is about 6.40 euros per adult (aller et retour).
Hotel in Brides les Bains : réservation obligatoire ! There are several hotels (see booking.com), some of which are already sold out, but still numerous rooms available. I will be staying at Hotel Le Centre and there are still a few rooms available there for the moment (tuesday November 7th, Protected content , mid-afternoon). I suggest you make your reservation though booking.com as quickly as possible. Hotel Le Centre, Hotel Savoie, Nereides, Cybele, Hermitage, Grand Chalet are all OK (and any other hotels located not too far away from Hotel Le Centre in the center of Brides les Bains). Make sure you choose a hotel close enough to the center of Brides les Bains to be near the bus stop, the restaurants, the ski lifts, and my hotel (Hotel Le Centre).
Ski lifts : the telecabine leaves from the center of the city of Brides les Bains (walking distance from the hotel), starts at 8:30 in the morning, the last return cabin departs at 5 pm in the afternoon from top). The cost of a day pass for the THREE VALLEYS (including access to all lifts in Méribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens, Les Ménuires, etc.) is about Protected content per adult for 2 days (saturday and sunday Protected content for children) or slightly less if you choose to ski only in Méribel rather than in the entire 3 VALLEYS domain. For 5 of six days, multiply this in proportion to the number of days. The pass can be bought on the first morning at the telecabine, there is no need to make a pre-reservation. Price of ski lifts is Protected content for 6 days of ski : Protected content
Renting skis : you can rent your skis in Brides les Bains on saturday morning (shops open at 7:30 or 8:00 or 8:30 AM). Usually there is no need to make a pre-reservation, but if yin prefer you can also pre-reserve on line on by phone. The ski-shop just across the street from Hotel Le Centre is fine (and conveniently located near the bus stop to give your skis back on the last day after skiing.
Restaurants : there are a dozen or so local restaurants in Brides les Bains for dinner. Each participant will pay for whatever he/she orders (no group orders). Dinners should preferably be reserved (it will be high season) on the morning of the same day, we will do that over there, no need to anticipate. You can prepare a picnic for the return train on sunday evening (there is an épicerie just across the bus station in Brides les Bains) and for lunch on skiing days (altitude restaurants are expensive but sometimes convenient if it's snowing and freezing).
Thermal baths : the thermal station (hot baths with health virtues) might be open for some spa bathing on evenings, and many of the hotels have their own spa, sauna or hammam.
Option : one possible option is to experiment high altitude paragliding in the beautiful french Alps. The flight starts at 2,700 meters, and flies all the way down (and up if any ascendent winds) to the bottom of Meribel or Courchevel villages, lasting up to 30 minutes or more in the air. Fantastic gliding ! This flight is preferably to be booked in advance. It can be experienced by any level of skiers, from beginners to experts. Of course you will be "en double" with a professional paragliding pilot. The flight takes off from what is said to be the highest altitude paragliding spot in Europe. A grandiose view on the French alps seen from above ! The entire flight can be video-filmed (you will go home with the video of you and your flight). This option costs Protected content 150 euros. Quite a life experience.
The total cost of the stay per adult for 6 days can be estimated at about Protected content if you bring your own skis (this includes TGV train tickets to and from Paris starting at about Protected content , a well chosen hotel Protected content (this can perhaps be shared with friends), ski lifts Protected content Protected content for taxi and bus to and from Brides les Bains) + restaurants + options (this amount is of course a minimum and the real cost varies of course depending on your train ticket, choice of hotel, forfait de ski, ski rentals or not, at what moment you make your reservations, how hungry you are at restaurants, and other options).
Cheers ! Looking forward to getting together and skiing,
P.S. : photos of a previous similar skiing event (same ski resort) can be seen here :
