In "Hamnet," Zhao returns to the intimacy of human drama, following a William Shakespeare ( Protected content ) devastated by the death of his son, an experience that would be at the origin of Hamlet, one of his masterpieces. The screenplay, written by the director, adapts the eponymous novel by Maggie O'Farrell.

With Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg among the producers, this biographical drama garnered seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Actress (Jessie Buckley), and Screenplay (Zhao). The cast also includes Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, Jacobi Jupe, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, and Olivia Lynes.
