Time Travellers - Exploring Ancient Woodland Borders.
Time Travellers (8 km)
Date: 27 August Protected content
Time: Approx. 4 hours
Meeting point: Protected content
For this new walk we’ll take the free Protected content
Our route mostly follows the boundary between the Royal Forest belonging to the Elector of Hanover (a.k.a. King George II of Great Britain and Ireland etc. etc.) and the woods he ceded to the villages to the east in Protected content . The boundary was marked, by order of the King, with 87 large stones, which are “glacial erratics” from Scandinavia, left here when the Saale glaciation receded about 300,000 years ago. We will see many of these stones along the route, each bearing an inscription.
The boundary stretches some 8+ km from the Rosengartenstrasse back to Neugraben where we can take a Protected content back to the S-Bahn.
The route follows footpaths up and down hills through beautiful woodlands (good walking shoes required!), largely through magnificent beech woods. Please bring something to eat and drink and appropriate clothing - there are no cafes or pubs along the route.
