September 2018 Book: Midnight's Children
Thank you for the great participation in the August meeting! With the next book, we will move from Central to South Asia: We decided to read „Midnight’s Children“ by Salman Rushdie. Rushdie, born in Protected content , is a British Indian novelist and essayist, probably most well-known for his novel „The Satanic Verses“ Protected content was the subject of a major controversy, provoking protests from Muslims in several countries and a fatwa calling for his assassination issued by the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini.
„Midnight’s Children“, published in Protected content , was Rushdie's first successful novel and winner of the Booker Prize. It deals with India’s transition from British colonialism to independence and the partition of British India into India and Pakistan. The protagonist and narrator of the story is Saleem Sinai, born at the exact moment when India became an independent country and, like all children born on that date, imbued with special powers. The book is considered an example of postcolonial, postmodern, and magical realist literature. Please be aware that the book is quite long, so start reading as soon as possible to finish it in time for the next meeting! :-)
Our meeting will again take place at Obá Restaurante in Jardins. It offers Thai food, but is also a relaxed place to have a healthy juice or some other drink. Located just a few blocks from Oscar Freire metro station (and walkable from Avenida Paulista), it should be convenient to reach.
