Semmering Railway Hike
I would like to use one of the remaining sunny autumn days to visit the World Heritage Site of the Semmering Railway.
The Semmering Railway is the first mountain railway in Europe built between Protected content Protected content includes 15 tunnels, 16 viaducts and Protected content bridges. Up to 10,000 men and women were involved in the construction of this remarkable engineering endeavor, led by leading engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega.
There is a beautiful hiking path along the railway and we can visit the Ghega Museum in Breitenstein and learn about this engineering masterpiece of the monarchy.
We will meet at Protected content
and can choose different distances, to the station Breitenstein (9 km) , Klamm Protected content , or even Payerbach Protected content , dependent from physical condition. From there we can take the train/bus back to Semmering station or choose a shorter route to Breitenstein only and walk back to Semmering station again Protected content .
Please make sure to wear trail hiking shoes, the terrain is a bit rocky.
We should share cars for the way to Semmering. The Austrian federal Railways offers the “Einfach raus” Ticket Protected content for 5 people), which is only valid on regional trains though and due to current construction works the journey would take 2,5 hrs. Therefore I would recommend car sharing, pending how many people are interested, we can organize the trip to Semmering in detail.
In case of bad weather I will postpone or cancel this event.
