A weekend in a hundred and one valleys
Is anyone up for spending a second consecutive weekend in Canton Ticino? The idea this time is to take the panoramic train along the Domodossola - Locarno railway, that's famous for crossing many secluded valleys (so many, that it's called "treno delle Centovalli", i.e. train of One Hundred Valleys). The plan on Saturday would be to stop by S.Maria Maggiore and have a hike in Val Vigezzo, a valley that has been home to many artists and it's known as Valley of Painters. As for Sunday, the goal is to hike along Val Verzasca, which is probably the most famous valley in Ticino. We could walk from Mergoscia, a town overlooking a huge dam where a James Bond movie was filmed, to Lavertezzo, renowned for its double arched bridge and its pools of green water. As all destinations are relatively close to Milano, you can choose to visit them either as a day trip or as a weekend trip. If you come on a day trip, we plan to catch the 9:29am train from Milano to Domodossola, followed up by either the 11:25 or 12:25 train to S.Maria Maggiore. First train should be 10.80 euro, while second train should cost 4 or 5 euro (one way).
If you come for both days, Locarno or Ascona are the most convenient places for an overnight stay. Before booking a hotel, try to read the fine print: make sure that the hotel provides you with a Ticino Card (90% of Ticinese hotels offers this service). This will allow us to travel for free on Sunday, throughout the whole canton (so on Sunday you'll just need to buy the 5 euro ticket from Chiasso to Milano).
