Katwijk at Sea Sand Dunes and Village - 15.4 Km

We take a bus from Protected content and start the walk inProtected content , formed by the blowing away of a moist dune valley, or a ‘pan’. This was the hunting ground of the Lords of Persijn, an old noble family living in a castle in Wassenaar from Protected content . Now it is a playground and walking area.
From there we walk through the natural monument Berkheide, which is part of the Hollandse Duinen National Park. Dune valleys and parabolic dunes are characteristic. The open landscape with grasslands is alternated here and there by forest or scrub. There are also many traces of the Atlantic Wall from the Second World War in the form of bunkers and obstacles for tanks, such as a kilometer-long tank wall.
From Berkheide we walk to the seaside boulevard of Katwijk at Sea and we will have a lunch in one of the seaside pavilions after about 8.5 km of walking.
After lunch we will take a short walk through the center of the old fisherman’s village and then into the dune area again. We will pass the Vlaggeduin, the highest dune in the area and with 37 km also the highest hill in the province of South Holland. The climb of the dune is optional but included in the total route distance.
From there we walk back to the Panbos where we can walk by another part of the Atlantic Wall remains.
Before we take the bus back to The Hague we can have a drink (or more) at the Protected content located at the entrance to the Panbos.
