To take CELTA or not? (Bangkok)

Just landed in Bangkok, my wife is head of an International school here. I graduated in the UK last year, aged 63. I don't want to be a 'housewife', doing nothing else during her 3 year contract. I'm thinking of taking the CELTA qualification, so I can teach English. Am I wasting my money at this age? If nobody wants to employ me, what are my chances of taking on private pupils? If I do, what are the chances of me getting thrown out for working without a permit? All advice welcomed, no matter how tough :-) My background is in the Hotel & Catering field. What else could I do? Best wishes Daniel
