Night life in the week (Cologne)

Hi,
My sister is coming to visit next month and I want to bring her to Cologne for the Christmas market on the Thursday. My experience of Dusseldorf on a week night is that it is fairly quiet is Cologne the same and we should get the last train back or is worth booking a hotel for the night?
