Working in Seville

Find out how to get a job and work in Seville

Along with all the advantages of a Mediterranean city, Seville offers many opportunities to all expats aiming on working in Seville: its inland port makes it a trade hub for Southern Spain, and it is famous for being an important technological and industrial center. Find out more in this article!

Employment in Seville

Local Economy

Seville has the largest GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of any city in Andalusia, in fact it accounts for one whole quarter of Andalusia’s total GDP, and is the most populated city in Southern Spain. Agriculture is the dominant industry in the smaller villages of Seville.

Seville has the most important inland port of Andalusia, being thus an import/export hub for the whole region.  The city depends on service and industry sectors: in particular trade, financial services, technology and tourism. The latter is one of the pillars of the local economy, since the city and its rich cultural heritage are appealing more and more visitors.

The city is moreover a technological and industrial hub: the Parque Tecnológico Sevilla Científico Tecnopolis and the Parque Tecnológico y Aeronáutico Aeropolis are two major center for technological research (the first) and aerospace (the latter).

Job Hunting in Seville

Many expats from all over the world move to Spain in the hope of setting up their own business, it will cost between five hundred and eight hundred EUR just to get together the licenses and permits needed to legally start up. Some fly over expecting to open a bar or restaurant, this is not advised as the rate of failure in that industry is relatively high, particularly with expats. Teaching English is a common profession among expats, and you may find that self-employment in teaching is for you, or that there’s a vacancy at one of the universities. You can search for job vacancies on, on, on Craigslist and on The Local.

Income Taxation in Seville

You need to clear whether you are a resident for tax purposes. This applies to expats and homeowners. You are a Spanish resident if you spend more than 183 days (roughly six months) in Spain in one calendar year, and they don’t have to be consecutive days. But you will also be presumed to be a Spanish resident if your “center of vital interests” is in Spain. For instance, if your husband or wife lives in Spain and you’re not legally separated. But you don’t need to submit a Spanish tax return if you have employment income of less than 22,000 EUR from one source. Income taxes in Seville – and the whole of Spain for that matter – need to be paid between May 1 and June 30 for the previous year. The financial year runs alongside the calendar year.  The percentage of the taxation is between 1 and 47. Find more information in the official website Agencia Tributaria.
