Employment in Vilnius

Local Economy

Vilnius is the major economic center of Lithuania, and the wealthiest city in the country, generating approximately 40% of Lithuania’s GDP from about 18% of the country’s workforce. This city is also one of the biggest financial centers of the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Expatriates working in Vilnius might be employed in the renewable energy sector, with much concentration on solar power, or in laser manufacture. There are some key global exporters there, too. The majority of Lithuania’s education infrastructure is also in Vilnius, making it a great place for expat teachers, particularly English teachers.

Job Hunting in Vilnius

Jobs within finance, logistics, and the information technology sectors, among others, can be found on a number of job websites, including glassdoor and CV online. A good place to start is also LinkedIn, where a number of Vilnius jobs are posted. Some large corporate firms have a jobs section on their websites, so for expats wanting to work for specific companies, this can be a good place to start.

Work Permits for Vilnius

European Union expatriates do not need a work permit to be employed in Vilnius, but do need to prove their residency. Work permits are issued for non-EU expats and must be organized before arriving in Lithuania. Work permits can last for up to two years and must specify the corporation for whom the expat will be working, as well as their position within the company.

The Ministry of Social Security and Labour look after the issue of work permits and ensure that no Lithuanian professional national can meet the employer’s criteria for the role. A temporary residence permit is issued alongside successful work permit applications.
