Relocating to Hungary

Getting to Hungary

Hungary has excellent connections to major international airports around the world. You can reach Budapest, the capital of Hungary, in approximately 2 hours from London, and many of the major budget airlines fly to the country. What this means is that Hungary is both accessible and cheap, and daily travel can easily be achieved between Hungary and the majority of major European countries. Bordering Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia, there are also countless opportunities to drive to Hungary and reach the country using the excellent European road system.

The Climate in Hungary

When moving to Hungary, you need to be aware of the climate and how it changes between the seasons to make sure you pack the right things. The climate in Hungary can be described as being typically Eastern European – with warm, dry, pleasant summers and cold, freezing winters. Heavy thunderstorms can accumulate around mountains in the interior of Europe, but generally the summer is sunny and warm. Be prepared to wrap up in winter, however, as temperatures normally hover around freezing. It can be fairly snowy in higher regions, too.

The Land and Its People

The Hungarian people have a long tradition – and a huge part to play in general European history. The Hungarian Kingdom was large and strong and to this day Hungary prides itself with one of Europe’s liveliest cultural scenes.

From 1950 to 1980, the population of Hungary saw a strong boom, and this generation and their children have had a huge role in modernizing the country. The modern Hungary is strong, independent and forward thinking – as well as being, at the same time, deeply aware of its history, culture, folklore and traditions. The past still plays an important role in Hungary and the way people live and are taught. If you are an expat hoping learn more about your future home, there are many books and articles written on the subject.
